There is a famous saying by mountaineer Lou Whittaker about the New Balance Rainier hiking boot, that was – equally wittily and effectively – claimed by New Balance‘s marketing team in the 80s: “You couldn’t pay me to wear this boot up Mt. Everest.”
But he did. That’s because Whittaker, who lead the expedition that made the first American ascent of the North Col on Everest in 1984, swore by the lightweight hiking boot that allowed him to hike longer without the massive wait of traditional models slowing him down.
