“MY KID COULD DO THAT”

Remember that one time when Michelangelo completed the Sistine Chapel at only six years old? If not, it’s all good, because it never happened. Still the widespread assumption of artists as god-like beings, blessed with magical abilities from birth, somehow seems stuck in people’s heads though. The upcoming exhibition “My Kid Could Do That” might change that:

At the one-day event, exhibits by KAWS, Jen Stark, Daniel Arsham and more artists provide “an unprecedented glimpse into some of the earliest works by these celebrated artists” and illustrate that we’re all born with the same technical abilities – shoutout to scribbled stick figure drawings and clumsily drawn suns.

While the works on display illustrate how each of us initially paints without regard to learned techniques or artistic genres, the exhibition also pursues another goal: It aims to break the emotional treshold for children and teens to express their creativity. To this end, the organizer, the nonprofit ProjectArt, is working with public libraries to organize free high-quality art classes for children who otherwise have no access to art education:

“Nothing speaks to our core message like this event’s childhood exhibit from the leading artistic icons of our era and the cultural, philanthropic and corporate leaders in the room sharing our vision and sentiment to invest for the long term in youth’s creativity,”

Adarsh Alphons, ProjectArt founder

“My Kid Could Do That” will be on view on November 2nd from 12 to 4 pm ET at Greenpoint Loft, Brooklyn, New York. It’s followed by a gala fundraiser by ProjectArt at 6:30.
