The new documentary “GARMS” celebrates the contributions of Black Britons and their enduring influence on fashion movements – from punks and streetwear to the runway.
To dissect the history of Black British fashion, its impact, and what role it will play in the future, the host Ayishat Akanbi speaks to some of the scene’s biggest game-changers and trailblazers of today: among them So Solid Crew’s Lisa Maffia, Bianca Saunders and the aforementioned Martine Rose and Clint419.
Starting all the way back with the arrival of the passenger ship HMT Empire Windrush, celebrating 75 years since its entry on UK soil, the 44-minute film is a story of vibrant subcultures and empowerment and offers an insightful exploration of migration, representation and moments of defiance – from challenging stereotypes to carving out own distinct narratives.
