Thanks to its port and the internationality that comes with it, Hamburg assembles many influences that make the city in Northern Germany as culturally (and culinary) interesting as it is. This diversity is especially palpable in the city‘s Schanzenviertel, better known as the ‘Schanze’: Besides a great deal of bars, restaurants, flea markets and stores, the vibrant neighborhood is also home to Hamburg’s very own mighty BSTN store.
So for the fifth episode of the BSTN Chronicles ‘City Series’, who better to ask than your local neighborhood BSTN crew? Paddi and his team have not only laced the city of Hamburg with the latest footwear drops and premium sportswear for over five years now, they also know the ins-and-outs of the Schanze and have compiled their very own list of go-to dining destinations.
Here come four hand-picked stops in the Schanzenviertel to have a feast at in fitting Hanseatic relaxation: Including delicious fish, as you would expect from the Hanseatic city, but also with Kebab, amongst others. And we’re talking the original Turkish Kebab, not the one you find everywhere else in Germany.
Fischimbiss Schabi’s
Location: Schulterblatt 60, 20357 Hamburg
Opening hours: Mon-Sun (Noon-9:30 PM)
Paddi (BSTN Store Manager):
“Schabis has been around for 28 years and is an institution in the Sternschanze. My favorites are pollock in pita bread or the redfish plate with fried potato, salad and remoulade.
The redfish especially, because when my mother used to make fish, there was always redfish. When the weather permits, I like to sit outside and watch the hustle and bustle of the Schanze.”
Location: Neuer Kamp 30, 20357 Hamburg
Opening hours: Mon-Tue (11:30 AM-4PM) / Wed-Sat (11:30 AM-10 PM) / Sun. closed
Chris (Assistant BSTN Store Manager):
“La Casita is definitely a must in the area. They offer a small, manageable menu to satisfy the big hunger as quickly as possible. Softshell tacos, well marinated meat and just the unmistakable smell of authentic tacos are always worth a go for me.
Regularly changing specials make the heart beat faster and especially with friends after work in the heart of St. Pauli, it can taste best.”
Location: Susannenstraße 10, 20357 Hamburg
Opening hours: Sun-Thurs (9 AM-2 AM) / Fri-Sat (9 AM-4AM)
Justin (BSTN Store Sales Assistant):
“I usually tend to go to Kebaba after work or for a midnight snack. But if I’m really hungry, I like to stop by there at lunchtime, too. There are changing daily specials, but the absolute highlight is the ‘Kebaba Döner – wie in der Türkei’ [‘Just Like in Turkey’], a Döner Kebab with a traditional spin, like tomato sauce and arugula.”
Location: Bartelsstraße 12, 20357 Hamburg
Opening hours: Mon-Wed (Noon-10 PM) / Thurs (Noon-10:30 PM) / Fri-Sat (Noon-11 PM)
Tim (BSTN Store Part Timer):
“Whether you want to go for dinner with family and friends or just have a lunch: Jill‘s is my number one address for Neapolitan pizza. The unique location, containing visible preparation with a traditional stone oven, a cozy courtyard, as well as traditional ingredients – all imported from Italy – make a visit a real experience of Neapolitan pizza.
For lunch I always keep it classic with a pizza margherita and a bottle of water, all for 8,50€ (12am-4pm). On a date night, I recommend the Bresaola (and a booking in advance to avoid waiting outside).”
