NIGO’S PUFFER ON THE BENZ

The never-not-bustling Nigo has joined forces with Mercedes-Benz and Moncler to create an one-off art piece for the great outdoors. Dubbed ‘Project G-Class Past II Future’, he put – quote from the amazed IG comment section – “the puffer on the Benz” by giving the German luxury car brand’s G-Class wagon a cocoon-like makeover:

Revealed in Shanghai last weekend, the car features a quilted roof cover reminiscent of Moncler puffer jackets, recalling the first collaboration between the brand and Mercedes-Benz which transformed the G-Class in an opulent (not movable) spectacle. Nigo’s actually ridable version aims for a more minimalistic and rugged design: The car, which was inspired by the design of the 1990s G-Class, blends futurism and nostalgia with a color palette of olive green and silver with orange accents throughout.

“Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character. I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era.”

Alongside signature design elements like a foldable windscreen and a checked seat upholstery, the car boasts a sound system installation courtesy of Devon Turnbull, audio engineer and G-Class enthusiast himself. Just like the puffer roof, the boom box-style controls and speakers offer the possibility to be removed. Other gadgets include a golden fuel can, because why not, and a co-branded spare wheel cover.

While Nigo’s three-way collaboration is proof of his expertise in turning everyday essentials into fashion and/ or statements, it’s also an one-off – but serves as the inspiration for a limited-edition G-Class model called the ‘Past II Future’, of which 20 units will be produced.
