In celebration of the classic Nike Cortez and the roller skating scene that was flourishing during the time of the silhouette’s original release, BSTN has teamed up with fellow Munich residents Gurlz With Curlz for an editorial and a community skating event.
Gurlz With Curlz, an aesthetic space dedicated to showcasing the experiences of Black women through events, exhibitions, and the magazine bearing the same name, aims to shed light on the realities of Black femmes in German-speaking countries, addressing a pressing need.
Roller skating discos have historically provided a space for Black individuals to gather, enjoy each other’s company, and escape the challenges of daily life. These vibrant events also served as a platform for showcasing individual styles and performances. The editorial strives to capture the essence of these aesthetics and the joy of self-expression.
The editorial is the first element of a two-part celebration that’s continued by a skating sundowner event on a custom-built rooftop rink in the heart of the city of Munich this upcoming weekend. BSTN and GWC invite members of the local community to skate on the one-of-a-kind track and maybe even win a limited-edition rollerskate version of the Cortez.
